Current EOSC Projects Funded by Horizon Europe

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) initiative aims to create a European system that allows easy finding and access to data and services for research and Innovation. Thanks to the Horizon Europe program, dozens of projects are currently underway that are fulfilling this vision and significantly shaping the future of science. This article provides an overview of current EOSC projects in Europe, categorized by thematic areas. Follow the calls on the European Commission's portal and the activities of the EOSC Association – not only for orientation in the rapidly developing ecosystem, but also because by engaging in these projects, institutions and individuals can actively contribute to shaping EOSC at the European level.

Projects by Thematic Areas

AI, Data Analytics & FAIR Principles

These projects focus on leveraging artificial intelligence, advanced data analytics, and the implementation of FAIR principles – that is, findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability – in the research data management. These initiatives aim to enhance data processing, improve accessibility, and ensure better interoperability across scientific domains. By adopting AI-based approaches, such as those developed within the AI4EOSC project, researchers gain new opportunities to extract insights from large and complex datasets and to automate time-consuming tasks.

Building the Infrastructure for the EOSC Federation

This group of projects focuses on developing the key components of the digital infrastructure that will form the backbone of the future EOSC Federation. They provide tools, platforms, and frameworks to support effective collaboration within the European Research Area and foster the creation of an open, interconnected, and sustainable ecosystem for scientific data. The main goal of these initiatives is to build a robust and scalable digital environment where researchers across Europe can securely store, share, and analyse data. Emphasis is placed on strengthening interoperability and security to ensure that scientific workflows remain transparent, reproducible, and widely accessible. For example, the EOSC Gravity project builds on the work of EOSC Focus and aims to support the EOSC Federation, support EOSC nodes, enhance collaboration among projects, and update the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA 2.0). Another example is EOSC Beyond, which brings new EOSC Core functionalities that enable scientific applications to search for, combine, and access various Open Science resources, and offer them to researchers as integrated services.

Domain-Specific Science & Environmental Research

These EOSC projects focus on specific scientific domains – particularly environmental research, health sciences, and climate change adaptation – addressing critical global challenges such as ocean and freshwater protection, the impacts of climate change, and cancer research. They tackle these topics through data sharing and the use of computational tools tailored to the needs of individual disciplines. A notable example is the EOSC4Cancer project, which supports the development of analytical methods and tools, including AI-based technologies. Its outcomes are expected to play a key role in advancing research and innovation in the field of oncology.

Open Access, Skills & Community Engagement

This area includes projects that connect scientific publications with their data sources, promote knowledge sharing, education, and skill development – all with the aim of facilitating the use of EOSC services among researchers and institutions. One example is the CRAFT-OA project, which focuses on improving the conditions for publishing scientific journals under the Diamond Open Access model. These initiatives support the scientific community by providing user-friendly platforms, enhancing digital literacy, and offering training. A good example is the Skills4EOSC program, which aims to motivate data professionals to develop skills in FAIR data and research data management, thus fostering their professional growth.

Research Collaboration & Advanced Services

Projects focused on advanced tools to enhance research collaboration, data FAIRification, and interoperability promote data exchange between scientific communities and provide access to digital tools for managing and analyzing research outputs. They are key to fostering cross-disciplinary innovation. One example is the OSCARS project, which brings together European research infrastructures across five scientific clusters and supports the adoption of open science in Europe, particularly through FAIR data, the federation of thematic services, and harmonized approaches to data, tools, and training within the EOSC initiative.

Who can participate in future projects?

Research institutions and their staff, providers of data and IT services, libraries, data centres, national and European organizations, as well as students and PhD candidates with an interest in FAIR Data and related areas, can get involved. The next call for proposals for 2025 is expected to open in May 2025.
